Elon Musk says he wants to lift Donald Trump’s Twitter ban – rts.ch

Donald Trump and his often untimely flights on Twitter could soon feed the social network again. His future boss Elon Musk has indicated that he will lift the suspension of the former US president’s account.

Donald Trump’s Twitter account was permanently shut down after the attack on Capitol Hill last year, depriving him of his main means of expression and fueling the debate on the moderation of comments by world leaders on social networks.

Elon Musk believes for his part that it was a “morally wrong” and “insane” decision.

“I think it was a mistake because it alienated a large part of the country and ultimately did not prevent Donald Trump from being heard” since he is now on his own social network, he underlined during of a conference organized by the Financial Times. And in the end, this ban has on the contrary made his opinion even more popular with the right-wing electorate in the United States, concluded the billionaire.

After his ban, Donald Trump, who was followed by more than 88 million users of the social network, had himself ruled out returning to the social network.

Bans were to be ‘extremely rare’

Permanent bans should be “extremely rare” and reserved for example for fake accounts, said Elon Musk.

“That doesn’t mean anyone can say whatever they want, if they say something illegal or destructive to the world,” the entrepreneur added. But then you have to consider temporary suspensions or tweets “that are made invisible” or “with a very limited scope”.

“But I think permanent bans fundamentally undermine trust in Twitter as a public place where everyone can express their opinion,” he said.

A buyout of 44 billion

The acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk was announced at the end of April. The billionaire has reached an agreement with the board of directors of the social network for a buyout at a price of 54.20 dollars per share. It is thus valued at some 44 billion dollars.

The boss of Tesla and SpaceX will thus become the owner of the platform which he considers to be “the digital public square where vital subjects for the future of humanity are debated”.

The richest man in the world has decided to buy Twitter to make it a private company, not listed on the stock exchange, and wants to make it a bastion of freedom of expression, which he considers flouted by too strict content moderation .
