In visit to norwaythe boss of Tesla, Elon Muskagain split big declarations as for the future technological developments of its car brand. But not only. Indeed, the richest man in the world clearly has two objectives to achieve within the next 4 months: make its electric cars 100% autonomous as well as put into orbit of the spaceship SpaceX.
“The two technologies that I am focusing on, and which I ideally expect to be developed by the end of the year, are the putting into orbit of our spacecraft (…) and the operational autonomous driving of Tesla cars. Elon Musk told Reuters.

Elon Musk could not resist the urge to tackle Europe once again. Indeed, on the subject of the autonomy of his vehicles, he indicated that it was necessary “To ensure that autonomous driving is available on a large scale, at least in the United States, and (…) potentially in Europe, in function of the regulatory green light”. Clearly, the United States would be more advanced on the legislative aspects than Europe. Which is of course possible. But from there to announcing total autonomy within 4 months, there is only one step.
The problem is that all this communication does not convince. And for good reason : Tesla just got pinned speak Department of Motor Vehicles even filed complaint with a court, accusing the manufacturer of lying to its customers about its autonomous driving technologies. For DMV, Tesla would have disseminated false or misleading statements.
More surprising: the big boss of Tesla also pleaded during this conference for the continued exploitation of oil and natural gas, while developing renewable energies in parallel. “Realistically, I think we have to use oil and gas in the short term, because otherwise civilization will collapse,” he said, adding that “one of the biggest challenges the world has faced is the transition to sustainable energy and to a sustainable economy,” he continued. “It will take a few decades to get there.”
Does this mean that Musk defends fossil fuels? Not really, because it’s rather independence of supply from countries at war, and in particular from Russia, which he offered. “I hate to say it, but we need to increase oil and gas production immediately. Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures.
Of course, that would have a negative impact on Teslabut sustainable energy solutions simply cannot respond instantly to offset Russian oil and gas exports,” Elon Musk insisted.
As visionary as he is, Elon Musk remains as realistic. He had also recently affirmed the need to continue with heat engines for a while, because transition to the electric car would probably take 40 yearswhich obviously distances us from the European objectives set for 2035 or 2050.
There remains the question of autonomous car which, of course, will not be settled at all by the end of the year. The best experts are counting on an arrival around 2040, even 2045. To be continued…
