Companies can now apply for the Regional Quantum Initiative in Southern Ontario

More than $23 million available over six years to commercialize quantum technologies

OTTAWA, ON, June 20, 2022 /CNW/ – Quantum technology is at the cutting edge of science and innovation and will have a transformative impact on key industries, such as computing, communications and security. To ensure that Canadian entrepreneurs are well positioned to take advantage of these opportunities, the Government of Canada makes strategic investments to develop quantum-ready technologies, businesses and talent, and consolidate global leadership in Canada in this domain.

Today, the Honorable Helena Jaczek, Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency of South of I’Ontario (FedDev Ontario), announced that companies can now apply for the Regional Quantum Initiative (QRI) in the South of Ontario. FedDev Ontario is providing more than $23 million over six years to help eligible companies scale and commercialize their quantum products and solutions in domestic and global markets. This investment is an important step in advancing the National Quantum Strategy.

Repayable contributions of up to $5 million will be made to projects that include a wide range of activities to demonstrate, commercialize and scale Canadian quantum technologies, solutions and companies. Examples of projects include technology demonstrations geared towards market growth, commercialization aimed at bringing new technologies to market, business development and capacity building and adoption of quantum technologies.

  • Quantum science is the study, manipulation and control of systems at the atomic and subatomic scale. It can lead to transformative technologies in areas such as computing, sensing, secure communications and the development of advanced materials.
  • Potential areas of quantum technology for funded projects may include: quantum computers, quantum software, quantum sensors, quantum communications, and quantum materials.
